Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson. It was inspired by the growing environmental movement and a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the EPA and the passage of landmark environmental laws.
Activities include tree planting, clean-up drives, educational programs, and sustainability pledges. Many organizations host environmental awareness events. Earth Hour, a related initiative, encourages people to turn off lights for one hour.
More than 190 countries participate in Earth Day activities. In India, massive tree-planting campaigns take place. Japan combines it with Greenery Day celebrations. In the Philippines, beach and river cleanups mobilize thousands of volunteers.
