Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring the United States free from British rule. The document, primarily authored by Thomas Jefferson, proclaimed the thirteen colonies as a new nation. The holiday has been celebrated since the 18th century.

Celebrations include fireworks displays, parades, barbecues, picnics, concerts, and patriotic decorations. Red, white, and blue dominate the color scheme. Many communities host fairs and festivals. The National Mall in Washington, D.C. features one of the largest celebrations.
