Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on November 1. Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead blurred on October 31. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween traditions to North America in the 19th century, where it evolved into the holiday we know today.

Bobbing for apples and telling ghost stories are classic activities. The holiday has become the second-largest commercial holiday in the US after Christmas.
